Our Glow And Protect Serum Has 3 Types of Vitamin C - Here's What They Do

Vitamin C, the much beloved skin booster, comes in many forms, all with slightly different properties when it comes to stabilisation, delivery or molecular chemistry. It’s the stability + efficacy + skin friendliness that we prioritise at REN Clean Skincare, which is why we use Kakadu Plum (more below!) as well as two additional forms of man-made Vitamin C, Tetraisopalmitate and Magnesium Phosphate. These forms of Vitamin C are incredibly effective (even at less than 1%), are very stable and are friendlier for sensitive skin. Think of this as us hedging our antioxidant bets for you by including variety in the formula for the best outcome.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that occurs naturally in the skin, which should give you a clue that it serves some very important functions. As an antioxidant, it helps to prevent environmental damage that can lead to a plethora of skin concerns such as dullness, an uneven skin tone and texture, and much more.

Kakadu Plum, our superfruit hero and the key source of vitamin C in our new product, has been recorded as having the highest natural source of this vitamin in the food industry (100x more than a standard orange) and contains 5x the antioxidant capability of blueberries. It not only helps boost the skin’s natural brightness and evens the appearance of skin tone, but helps protect against damaging free radicals too. I love that it also contains vitamin E, and a rich variety of minerals like zinc, folate, magnesium, and calcium. It truly is the ‘super’ of superfoods.

Our formula also uses pure Dragon Fruit extract (cold pressed from the fruit with no water added) to support the skin’s microbiome with naturally occurring prebiotics and hydration-boosting minerals. Finally, we used Pomegranate Seed extract – one of the richest sources of omega 5 – to soothe the skin and help strengthen the skin barrier. As an essential fatty acid, it can help stimulate keratinocyte proliferation, which promotes regeneration of the epidermis (outer skin layer).

Finally, as I mentioned earlier, we’ve added Tetraisopalmitate and Magnesium Phosphate, which are stable and oil-soluble forms of man-made vitamin C that are kinder to sensitive skin. These are easily absorbed and converted into vitamin C in the skin and further help to promote brightness and even the appearance of skin tone without causing irritation.

Overall, this formula is for those of us who want protection against damaging free radicals, but who also don’t need that classic vitamin C ‘sting’ in our lives. Perfect for retinol users, sensitive skin folk, or active city-dwellers who want to layer it with their favourite SPF for maximum skin protection, radiant glowing skin, and a healthier skin surface over time.
